Many people are curious about how to become a model. Nowadays, there are a world of opportunities across the industry, thanks to a growing appreciation for diversity.

From different body types and skin tones to unique features and identities, individuality is celebrated like never before. Famous models like Ashley Graham and Adut Akech are leading the way in transforming beauty standards.

There is always someone who wants to be the next Kendall Jenner, working with a top fashion photographer or designer. But despite what the movies tell us, becoming a professional model isn’t just about having good looks.

It’s about having the talent, uniqueness, and drive to back up those assets. Here are some useful tips that will teach you how to be a model.

    Know the Model Types

The first step in becoming a model is knowing the different types of modeling to specialize in. There are quite a few areas. You should know that which area you excel in will be up to your agency or clients. Print focuses on magazine editorials and advertising campaigns. Meanwhile, runway models walk the catwalk for labels.

There are also more commercial options, such as being a swimsuit or catalog model. Plus size modeling has made an impact in recent years too. In fashion, most female models start at the very minimum height of 5’7″ but closer to 6’0″ is preferred.

    Find the Right Agency

    Modeling Agency

Now that you have figured out the modeling categories, look for an agency. You can search online for agencies easily. A simple “model agency” query on Google will garner plenty of results. Search for an agency that’s close to where you live.

So for example, if you live in Los Angeles, make sure that the agency has offices nearby. It’s also important to remember to research an agency first. Think: What models do they represent? What type of jobs do they book? Are there any complaints online about this agency?

Remember, to stay away if an agency asks for any money upfront. So-called modeling schools and packages are also suspect. In addition, be on the look out for people who claim to be a part of a reputable agency.

If the email or message is not from an official account, make sure to contact the agency on their official website to confirm that the person works there. There are plenty of scammers out there looking to take advantage of young people.

    Take the Right Photos

After you have researched the right modeling agency, you will want to contact them. Most agencies provide online forms where you can submit your photos and basic details called stats. These include your height, measurements, and weight.

They will also want to see images of you. Don’t stress about arranging a professional photo shoot; most agencies only require simple digital photos. Make sure to do a headshot and full-length shot (an image that shows you from head to toe).

Wear no makeup and a simple tank top and pants. Snap the image in natural light, so your features are easily seen. You can email or share your photos on a modeling portfolio online for ease. Look for a response within (typically) 4 weeks.

Some agencies host open calls, giving aspiring models the chance to be seen in person. You can typically reach out to an agency to ask about their open call schedule.

Bring your digitals or past professional work printed out. Once again, wear minimal styling and makeup. Remember, even if you don’t match what they’re seeking, stay hopeful.

    Work on Your Poses

Modeling poses are a critical skill since they convey the desired emotion or message. Start by practicing in front of a mirror to understand your best angles and how to control your body.

Different modeling types require distinct poses. Commercial models favor approachable, relaxed, and relatable poses to connect with everyday audiences.

Meanwhile, high-fashion models go for bold, angular stances and striking movements to create dramatic visuals. Study magazines and professional shoots to learn poses suited for each niche. Engage your hands, eyes, and expressions.

    Take Care of Yourself

Modeling can be a tough job due to lots of traveling, long days of work and having to show up with the best version of yourself every day. Therefore, taking good care of yourself is very important.

So make sure you eat healthy, get exercise to stay in shape and focus on your skin care. Clear skin is important in the modeling industry. Additionally, dental care should be focused on.

    Social Media & Modeling

One important thing to have in today’s modeling world is a social media presence. There are plenty of brands that will not consider casting a model in a campaign unless they have a sizable Instagram or TikTok following.

Likewise, if you are able to build up your social media presence, a big modeling agency will be more likely to sign you. Girls like Jasmine Sanders and Alex Consani raised their modeling profile thanks to their social media engagement.

So, how do you go about building up your Instagram or TikTok following? Make sure to be active, commenting on popular accounts and update your own page at least three times a week.

    Building Your Portfolio

A strong portfolio is a must-have for aspiring models. Think of it as your visual resume, showcasing your range, style, and versatility. Start with high-quality photos that include a mix of headshots, full-length images, and editorial-style shots.

Collaborate with professional photographers or participate in test shoots to build experience and connections. This can open the door to other opportunities by working with photographer, stylists, and make artists. Include a variety of looks to demonstrate your adaptability. This can range from casual to high-fashion.

Online portfolios, hosted on platforms like Wix or your own website, make sharing with agencies and potential clients easy.

    Diversity in Modeling

Once dominated by narrow beauty ideals, the modeling industry now embraces inclusivity, with brands and agencies seeking models who reflect the real world. Plus-size, petite, gender-fluid, and differently abled models are making their mark, reshaping the definition of beauty.

This shift is driven by consumer demand for representation and authenticity in fashion and media. Aspiring models should highlight their unique qualities, as individuality is increasingly valued.

    What to Expect

If you are lucky enough to get signed, you should also be aware of all the difficulties that come along with the job. Depending on the modeling jobs you book, traveling can take you away from home a lot. Rejection is also something, especially at the beginning of the career, you need to get used to.

Even with a signed contract, some models maintain part-time jobs to support themselves. This is why it’s important to have backup plans in case a modeling career doesn’t work out.

If you succeed, countless opportunities can open up for you. Successful models like Gisele Bundchen and Hailey Bieber have transformed their looks into lucrative careers with their business smarts.
