I am a 90s baby! It’s definitely my favorite era when it comes to music, fashion, and beauty like grunge makeup. It’s the age of Backstreet Boys, 98 Degrees, and all the hottest boy bands. Then there’s Clueless, which made Alicia Silverstone an A-list Hollywood celebrity and my demi-goddess until I was in college. Her closet was once my dream! One of the biggest things that came from these years, however, is grunge. It’s an alternative rock subgenre that began in Seattle with sounds dominated by electric guitars, indie music, more emotionally charged lyrics, and freestyle fashion. From it came the grunge makeup, which I will talk about today.

What is the grunge makeup? It’s actually a mixture of goth and emo with certain important highlights: red (or nude) lips, heavy emphasis of makeup on the eyes, strong preference for darker shades especially black, and pale skin, which allows these colors to stand out.

1. A Catty Look With Winged Eyeliner

My mother used to call the grunge days the age of rebellion. You know, teens. As for me, it was a period of can-do attitude. There’s no better way to express that than to complement a fiery orange hair with a gorgeous blend of dark eyeshadow. If you can’t go for browns, make sure you can go black. Or you can combine both!

She’s probably my present-day demi-goddess for grunge with sophistication. Of course, it helps that she has pale skin, which allows the colors to pop. But then, let’s face it, it’s all about sex appeal too! She’s just OOOZZZING with it!
6. Grunge On Brown Eyes
While grunge makeup tends to prefer pale skin (which I have said before), that doesn’t mean medium skin can’t wear it anymore. Just look at the image above. In fact, it’s black on black, which only lets her beautiful brown eyes to shine through. If your skin tone is a bit dark, just go one shade paler, and you’re good to go!
7. Let’s Go Soft
Grunge back in the 90s was about garages, indie bars, and dark scenes. Well, guess what, you can now wear the makeup at daytime too. This look is called the soft grunge, which is composed of dark eyeshadow or liner (don’t forget, don’t go too heavy!) complemented with nude-colored lips.
